Bunshiro Maki (Takuya Ishida) is a young samurai, skilled at sword fighting, but struggling at the bottom of the strict hierarchical order. His situation is worsened when is father is forced to commit ritual suicide after being accused of plotting against his clan, and his childhood sweetheart, Fuku (Aimi Satsukawa) is sent away to Edo to serve in the clan lord's household.

A few years pass and Fuku (now played by Yoshino Kimura) has reluctantly become the lord's concubine and has bore him a son. Bunshiro (Somegoro Ichikawa), however, hears about a plot to kill Fuku and her baby so that the clan can secure the succession of the throne. Together with two childhood friends, Bunshiro heads to Fuku's rescue. But will he be able to save her in time?
